How Long Does a Cricket Bat Last?

There is no fixed answer to how long a cricket bat lasts. A well looked-after English Willow bat can last several seasons, while a neglected one can crack in a few matches. How long yours lasts depends on how much you play, who bowls to you and how you care for the bat.

What affects a bat's lifespan

• How often you play: a bat used twice a week in matches ages faster than one used for casual games.
• The ball: hard leather balls wear a bat quicker than tennis or tape balls.
• Knocking in: a bat that is not knocked in properly is far more likely to crack.
• Willow quality: better grades of English Willow tend to hold their performance and shape for longer, though care matters as much as grade.
• Storage and moisture: damp, heat and damp ground shorten a bat's life.

Signs your bat is wearing out

• Cracks along the edges or toe that keep growing.
• A dull sound and less "ping" when you hit the ball.
• Deep dents and splits on the face.
• The handle loosening or the splice cracking.

How to make it last longer

1. Knock the bat in properly before using it with a hard ball.
2. Fit an anti-scuff sheet and toe tape.
3. Do not use it on wet or very hard balls or as a prop in the nets.
4. Wipe it dry after play and keep it in a cover, away from heat and damp.
