Cricket Gloves Size Guide

Batting gloves that fit well give you a secure grip, protect your fingers and let you play your shots freely. Gloves that are too big twist on the handle, and gloves that are too small restrict your fingers and are uncomfortable. This guide shows you how to measure your hand and choose the right size.

How to measure your hand for cricket gloves

1. Wrap a soft tape measure around the widest part of your hand, just below the knuckles, excluding the thumb.
2. Note the measurement in inches or centimetres.
3. Measure the length from the base of your palm to the tip of your middle finger.
4. Do this for your top hand, usually the stronger one, and use the larger number.

Brands label sizes differently, so use this as a starting point and check the maker's own chart. The ranges are approximate.

The fit test

• Your fingertips should reach the end of the glove fingers without bunching or a large gap.
• Make a fist and grip a bat handle. The glove should not pull tight across the back of your hand.
• The finger protection should line up with your finger joints.
• The glove should feel snug at first: leather gloves loosen slightly with use.

Left hand or right hand?

Gloves are labelled for the batter, not the hand. A right handed batter wears gloves marked right hand, with the top (right) hand on the lower part of the handle. Left handed batters need left hand gloves. Check the label before ordering.

Pick the right style

Gloves with a protective spine and rolled fingers suit hard ball cricket and give the best protection. Lighter gloves with flexible fingers suit tennis ball and practice sessions. If you are buying for a growing child, choose the right size now rather than buying large: loose gloves are less safe.
