The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken a bold step by proposing that all matches of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, including those involving India, be hosted in Pakistan. Scheduled for February and March 2025, the ninth edition of the prestigious cricket tournament will feature the top eight One Day International (ODI) men’s national teams competing for glory.
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, in a recent press conference, confirmed the submission of the proposed schedule to the International Cricket Council (ICC), emphasizing the desire for a complete Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Naqvi highlighted the positive response received from the ICC security team during their recent visit to assess the country’s readiness, expressing satisfaction with the facilities and security arrangements at key venues such as the National Bank Stadium in Karachi, Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, and Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi.
However, amidst the optimism, uncertainties loom over the participation of the Indian cricket team. Tensions between India and Pakistan have often spilled over into the realm of sports, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would need government clearance to send the team to Pakistan. Sources within the BCCI have hinted at a potential hybrid model for the tournament, contemplating the option of hosting some matches outside of Pakistan. There is also speculation regarding alternative venues should India be unable to participate as per the proposed schedule.
