In the first match of West Indies vs South Africa a three-game Twenty20 series, the West Indies secured a 28-run victory over South Africa in Kingston. Stepping in for captain Rovman Powell, who was busy with IPL commitments, Brandon King led the team with an outstanding performance, scoring 79 runs off 45 balls. His impressive innings included six sixes and six boundaries, helping the West Indies reach a total of 175-8 in their 20 overs.

Despite Reeza Hendricks’ solid half-century for South Africa, the team fell short, managing only 147 runs before being all out. King’s familiarity with the Sabina Park ground, his home venue, played a significant role in his success. He stressed the importance of playing aggressively against the new ball on a challenging pitch.

King and Kyle Mayers set a strong foundation with a crucial 79-run partnership. South Africa struggled from the start, losing Quinton de Kock in the first over. Although Hendricks fought back, the team couldn’t build momentum and kept losing wickets. West Indies’ bowlers Gudakesh Motie and Matthew Forde were instrumental in restricting South Africa’s progress.

Reflecting on the game, South African captain Rassie van der Dussen noted that West Indies’ performance was unexpected and highlighted the need for his team to adapt quickly. Despite notable efforts from Andile Phehlukwayo and debutant Ottneil Baartman, South Africa couldn’t chase down the target.
