Shahid Afridi, the former Pakistani all-rounder, has been named as an ambassador for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, which will take place in the West Indies and the USA. He joins a prestigious group of ambassadors, including Indian cricket legend Yuvraj Singh, the dynamic Chris Gayle, and the legendary sprinter Usain Bolt. Afridi’s association with the tournament goes back to its beginnings.
Afridi played a pivotal role in Pakistan’s journey to the final of the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 and their triumphant campaign in the 2009 edition. These achievements have cemented his legacy in the history of the tournament.
Speaking about his involvement as an ambassador, Afridi expressed his excitement and nostalgia, saying, “The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup holds a special place in my heart. From being honored as the Player of the Tournament in the inaugural edition to lifting the trophy in 2009, some of the most memorable moments of my career stem from competing on this prestigious stage.”
He also acknowledged the evolution of T20 cricket and the World Cup format over the years, expressing his thrill at being part of an edition that promises more teams, more matches, and greater excitement.
Afridi highlighted the much-anticipated India versus Pakistan clash scheduled for 9 June and emphasized the significance of this historic rivalry, especially on the stage of New York, where the match will take place.
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup kicks off on 1 June, with the USA co-hosting the opening match against Canada at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas. This sets the tone for what promises to be an exhilarating tournament filled with thrilling encounters and intense competition.
